GNOME project co-founder Miguel de Icaza discusses the recent release of Mono 2.0, in this detailed interview with Henry Kingman, executive editor of DesktopLinux. The conversation spans Mono's history, current state, and future, with stops along the way for status reports on Moonlight and Mono Develop.

According to de Icaza, Mono has found success among enterprise developers, who use it to run ASP.net applications on Linux servers. It has also seen use among embedded developers, and as a "gaming engine." However, it's original intended purpose was to further the Linux desktop, says de Icaza, himself a desktop Linux user for more than eleven years.
